Getting out of Iceland’s forest

Today I, along with other lone travelers, rented a car to do a bit of sight seeing ourselves. Min, Olivier, Brian, Erica and I had a wonderful adventure exploring the “Golden Circle” and everything else we could along the way. First we saw some horses on our way to the first waterfall Seljalandsfoss, where we were able to climb the rocks behind it. At the second waterfall – Skógafoss – we were able to climb it and hike a bit, only to discover more waterfalls that fed into the huge one below. At the very top, we were able to see the glacier peaking out just above the hills in front. Making our way, we stopped to visit the Geyser, another water fall – Gullfoss, and finally making our way to the old parliament – Þingvellir – before we headed home. Later when we got home, we found out that the volcano Grimsvötn under a nearby glacier had blown its top and of course it is just my luck! This is the second time I have landed on an island on this trip where one of the volcanoes decided it was time to erupt! Now, the airports are closed and there is ash headed toward Reykjavik. I wouldn’t be upset if I had to stay longer in this beautiful island but of course I am very much looking forward to seeing London.

How many foreigners does it take to open the trunk of a car? 3 Americans, 1 French and 1 Australian. How do you get out of an Icelandic forest? You stand up! Being quite obvious in the pictures, we did confirm ourselves that there really are virtually no trees on the island. Such is life that makes way for beautiful pictures.

Not so lazy day of updates

I have been updating the site pages all morning, adding and organizing new content. More to come on my breaks today. For now, some new quotes to add to Project | Table as I consume another book. Yummy!

“In friendship, power always has its downward curve. One’s strength to manage rises always higher until there comes a time one does not win, and though one may not really lose, still from time to time that victory is not sure, one’s power slowly ceases to be strong. It is only in a close tie such as marriage, that influence can mount and grow always stronger with the years and never meet with a decline. It can only happen so when there is no way to escape.”

“Friendship goes by favour. There is always danger of a break or of a stronger power coming in between. Influence can only be a steady march when one can surely never break away.”

“Romance is the ideal in one’s life and it is very lonely living with it lost.”

“It was not her being good, he wanted to find in her.”

“Except just in little moments, and not those very often, they never said anything about their feeling.”

– Gertrude Stein, Three Lives

Midnight sun – who needs sleep?

A fellow traveler – Min – and I took a nice walk today, pretty much all over town and back again. We started out walking clear across the city to the Saga museum and hanging around the city center. On the way, we were both snapping photos and having lots of laughs. It was a wonderful morning! I now get up at 6am here, which is 2am in New York City. I spend my mornings wandering around in search of inspiration before I log onto work at 1pm (9am back home). It is a wonderful experience here, as there is daylight for about 20 hours a day or more. I believe it never actually gets dark, just a bit dimmer. Although it is tough to go to sleep, or even realize what time it is for that matter, I am making every second count and it is simply wonderful!
